In an era where many peoples' understanding of the term 'R&B' is 'Rihanna & Beyonce', where Soulja Boy is cited as a sick hip-hop lyricist, and where the same 20 songs are guaranteed to be played every Friday night in every High Street venue in the land ... you could be forgiven for thinking that urban music clubbing in 2011 has lost a little direction!
Thankfully, there are exceptions to every rule, and not all promoters are content with creating just another cloned event with no musical imagination. A case in point is the team behind Rude Love, a new urban music weekly at the plush Bliss venue in Southampton. With value placed on quality musical selections, carefully vetted DJs and live acts, and a fun and all-inclusive vibe, the team are taking the essence of clubbing back to its golden years.
The session runs every Saturday from 9pm to 2am, helmed by resident DJ Youssef, who has tirelessly put in work on the South Coast clubbing circuit for many years as part of the 5Ft Hero collective. Musically, the mix consists of party-style hip-hop and R&B, old and new, blended with bashment, and the occasional foray into garage.
With many themed promotions lined up over the coming weeks, it's worth keeping an eye on the event's Facebook group at:

In particular, watch out for Black Sheep Magazine itself in the house on 14th May, with Mark Devlin guesting on the decks.
In the meantime, for a flavour of the night, here's where to catch the official Rude Love Volume 1 mix CD.
