DJ Maraku: Podgorica's pioneer

By Mark Devlin | 07 November 2014

Hip-hop and R&B has been long established as a hugely popular genre in the clubs throughout most of Europe. But there are still a few uncharted territories where its appeal is yet to reach its peak. The Balkan states that made up the former Yugoslavia are among them, and here, in Montenegro's principal city of Podgorica, is where to find DJ Maraku.

In a market largely dominated by house, techno, and other forms of ethnic dance music, Maraku has tirelessly stood his ground as a pioneer of urban/ black music, and has worked passionately at creating an enthusiastic market for the sounds in his homeland.

Maraku became interested in black music at a young age, and in 2000 decided to go down this route, perfecting his mixing and scratching skills to ensure a captivating presence on the decks. His persistence paid off, bringing an early radio slot on both Radio Free Montenegro, then on the national station Radio 98. Club work in all his country's major venues followed, and Maraku established close links with the biggest rappers from all over the Balkans.

Currently, he can be found running his popular club nights under the brand name It's All About Beats, along with his Out Of The Box radio series, which is available on-line.
