Being mentored by her father from a young age, she built her ambition for music by forming a part of local choirs and groups, leading her to discover herself as a natural songwriter. Since 2006, Rebekka has embraced her solo sound, and delivered the outstanding debut EP, 'Coffee and Music'. Now, Bekky is kick-starting her sophomore release with the support of the MTV Network (Norway) currently airing the single 'What U Said' featuring Rapper Big Pooh, with 'Don´t Worry' featuring Jo´Leon to follow.
Being Norwegian, how easy is it to write and sing songs in English?
At first it was difficult, because with different languages many things are lost in translation. However, as time goes along, writing has become easier as I continue practicing the English language daily.
Who is your favourite songwriter? How have they inspired the lyrical content of your music?
I was always interested in the musicof artists like Stevie Wonder and Nat King Cole. The way they put the words together in relation to their vocal ability seemed to be more than just music. With respect to them and the other artists that I appreciate, I must note that my songs are inspired by my everyday life.
You have just released a collaboration single featuring U.S. rapper and Little Brother member, Big Pooh. How did this project happen? What was it like working with an International artist like Pooh?
First of all, I'm grateful to have worked with Rapper Big Pooh. He is a very pleasant and talented musician. We met because I was in contact with his DJ, Skillz, for three years. During that time I made him aware of my interest to do a song with rapper Big Pooh. Thankfully he accepted and also appeared in the video. It was easy to work with him because of his laid-back style and I might add that he is very professional.
Do you think the criteria for making music differs in each country? Why?
I don't believe that the value of music is based upon what country you are from. It all depends on the individual. I say this because some people don't take music as serious as others.
Growing up, what was your perception of the music industry? Now you are an artist, how different is the reality?
In the beginning, I saw the music world to be more about the music. However, today the music industry seems to be more motivated by money.
Where do you see your music being most successful? Neo Soul or Gospel? Why?
I see my music being most successful with listeners that are open. When listeners hear my music and give it a chance, they give themselves an opportunity to see my views and possibly relate. That is what success is measured by, for me.
'Coffee and Music' was your debut EP back in 2008. Now you are to release your second EP. Describe this in five words. When is the release date?
Realistic, natural, enjoyable, soulful and Rebekka. The release date is not set yet, but before the end of the Summer it will be out.
What is the best advice you have ever been given on life?
"Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it are the sources of life..." Proverbs. 4:23.
Who are you supporting in the World Cup? If there was a World Cup for music, which male and female artist (past or present) do you think would win the cup?
Argentina (due to the fact I met Maradona here in Norway, and he gave me a smile). Stevie Wonder and Ce Ce Winans would have been my pick.
Which UK artists do you rate the most?
Corinne Bailey Rae, and my brother Joleon D'Avenue!
Rebekka´s yet to be titled sophomore EP is due soon via G´Bless Records.
