Still In Control

By Kabita Singh | 18 August 2010

After a slightly nerve-wracking wait, Black Sheep among others, finally gets to sit down with the legendary Janet Jackson and groundbreaking filmmaker Tyler Perry. The duo are in town to promote their new film, 'Why Did I Get Married Too?' a follow up to the first instalment which was released in 2008.

Tyler joins us first and the huge presence of the man is undeniable. He tells us that he has just presented Janet with some birthday gifts, ("a bracelet, a watch and a purse", he admits) and a couple of minutes later is followed by the lady herself, who walks in looking effortlessly striking along with a brand new, super short hairdo. 'Tyler, Thank you very much", she says shyly.

Why Did I Get Married Too continues from on from where the previous film left us. In case you're yet to get acquainted, the films centre around 4 couples that take an annual vacation together to discuss their relationships. Janet plays physcologist Patricia Agnew, whose inability to follow her own relationship advice leads to much drama for the character. The film also stars soul songstress Jill Scott and Tyler himself, who say's this of the film's aims:

"What I wanted this film to do is when you leave, I wanted people to be going 'wow, am I this person?' 'Do I behave this way?' and 'Do I take the person that I love for granted?"

The original cast all returned to film the sequel, and not just because of the Bahamas location, "it begins with Tyler actually', explains Janet, "he's just a joy to work with...he's created a family. Everyone got along so well...so to go back and do 'Why Did I Get Married Too', was so exciting and nice to all be back together again."

The film focuses on the female characters and its hard to miss the reality of the situations they face. Tyler believes he gained insight into the female psyche from his childhood, 'It's my mother. My father was a son of a bitch; he was just the worst of the worst. If you see Precious, the mother in Precious was my father. Hands down. My mother would take me everywhere with her and I would be sitting with these women, listening to them talk about men, watch them cry together, listen to them just pour their hearts out about the pain that they were going through and I think it made me extremely sensitive to women. The fact that as a kid, I could not protect (my mother) makes me always want to speak to the empowerment of women".

Janet's character Patricia goes through much upheaval in the sequel and the film features her in some pretty shocking and emotional scenes. "It was really cathartic because of going through...my family...the tragedy, that was recent then. It was very therapeutic for me to be able to release."

One particularly hard-hitting scene sees Patricia smashing up an apartment with a golf club. Say's Janet of filming the scene, "I hit Tyler and I didn't know it. I hit him in the elbow. I broke 4 iron shafts, I hit myself in the foot, in the ankle, and it was sore for the rest of the shoot".

If all this sounds a little heavy, don't worry as it is perfectly balanced out in the character of Angela, played brilliantly by Tasha Smith. Her ideas on how to tell whether your man is cheating are so on point; they're worth the price of the cinema ticket alone.

The obvious affection and easy friendship that exists between Janet and Tyler is impossible to ignore, and it's no surprise that Janet has signed on to star in Tyler's next project, 'For Coloured Girls': the reason for Janet's new short haircut, "It's the haircut, a whole new look", says Tyler. "She plays a power woman in New York, who runs a fashion magazine, so she came up with all of this!"

Those of your wondering whether Janet has put music on the back burner needn't worry, her single 'Nothing' features on the soundtrack to the movie, "I co-wrote the song with Jermaine Dupri, presented it to Tyler and he liked it. But it was really inspired by the characters he, (Tyler) had written".

Although not currently signed to a record label, Janet still has plans to record, "right now I have been focusing on acting and the majors have called and they wanna sign but it's a matter of me just really taking the time out. Sitting down with them and deciding if I'm going to take that route or do something that's a little more independent".

Tyler Perry's 'Why Did I Get I Get Married Too?' is released in cinemas on September 3rd.
