Canadian History J

By Felix Mensah | 02 April 2013

All the way from British Colombia and raised into a musical family J. Danglez’s initial musical roots  was as a rock guitarist, he has (for now) ditched the guitar and started learning the art and craft of rap and BTW his elder brother is Canadian underground rap prince Eric Izzle. J.Danglez is more than happy to donate a few spare moments or so, to speak to Blacksheep Magazine.

 1. PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO THE READERSHIP OF BLACKSHEEP MAGAZINE?

Names J. Danglez (Justin English) of Rat Trap Productions and member of Rat Trap Mafia as well as the produce for Rat Trap Mafia.

2. IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT YOU INITIALLY STARTED IN THE ROCK GENRE BEFORE YOU SWITCHED TO HIP-HOP/RAP. YOUR ELDER BROTHER IS ERIC IZZLE, DID HE SPECIFICALLY INFLUENCE THE GENERIC MOVE?

Yes, my music career started with being a lead guitarist in a heavy metal band. Sadly that fizzled out before we hit ears. My brother (Eric Izzle) greatly influenced my Rap career as well as some life long friends, Jeff (Mawnster) Maw and Lloyd (Dienasty) Smithers.

3. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PERFECTING YOUR RAPPING CRAFT?

I haven't been rapping for that long, I recently got into it 3 halloweens ago when I did my first show with Rat Trap Mafia and started putting effort into it.

4. AS A RECORDING ARTIST HOW MANY ARTISTS AND HOW MUCH OF YOUR BACKGROUND HAS INSPIRED AND INFLUENCED YOU ENOUGH IN YOUR CRAFT?

I like to tell stories about what I've done and been through in life and hope to reach out to someone that needs help with a specific situation. I have always liked the rap that helps people and tells the truth about certain topics. Tupac has been a great influence on me and has even helped me out of some rough spots and I hope that I can do the same for someone one day.

5. HOW HAS THE PUBLIC RESPONSE BEEN TO J DANGLEZ SO FAR?

It's been all love and support for me so far and I hope to keep it that way. I'm currently on number 3 on Reverbnation.com, so people must like what they hear and i intend to keep giving the people what they want.

6. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT RELEASE AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE TO IT TO DATE?

My most current release was Nightmare, off the Murderous Mix. I have had no negative feed back from it, although its kind of a dark song.

7. HOW HAS MEDIA AND RECORD COMPANY INTEREST BEEN SO FAR, REGARDING YOUR WORK?

As far as I know there hasn't been any media or recording companies looking into my music so far, but I hope soon there will be.

8. HOW BIG IS THE URBAN / R&B SCENE OUT IN CANADA, AND ARE THERE ANY OF YOUR FELLOW COUNTRY PERSONS WE SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR?

It is a very popular scene out here, for hobbies and aspiring artists. There are many artists out here that people should keep an eye out for. There is Eric (Eric Izzle) English, Jeff (Mawnster) Maw, Lloyd (dienasty) Smithers and Jeff (J. Mac) MacDonald.

9. HAVE OR WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER TAKING THE REALITY SHOW OPTION TO PROMOTE YOURSELF?

Yes that sounds like a good option, It's crossed my mind. It would have to be a good show though.

10. ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC PRODUCERS, PERFORMERS etc THAT YOU HAVE AMBITIONS TO WORK WITH ? IF SO WHO ?.

I'm doing what I love with my Brother Eric Izzle and thats what I want to do. If someone wants to do a song with me, great, but I'm happy here.

11. WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THE FANBASE THAT YOU MAY ATTRACT ?

Their the reason music exists, any fan is a good fan. There is a line that fans shouldn't cross with an artist and my only hope is that they don't cross that line.

12. YOU SUPPORT THE SOUL AGAINST RACISM CAUSE, CARE TO EXPLAIN FURTHER?

Yes, I am a strong supporter of Soul Against Racism. For many many reasons. The biggest reason is, that I believe we are all brothers and sisters in this world, regardless of ethnicity, religion or anything else and if we treated each other as such there wouldn't be so many problems in the world. There’s way way too much in the world to have so much hate.

13. ANYTHING THAT YOU CARE TO ADD, BEFORE THIS INTERVIEW IS CLOSED?

I would just like to thank the fans and artists that support me and my music as well as the producer* for Rat Trap Mafia. Much love and respect. Keep the love strong - J. Danglez
