Where for art thou, Antonio

All the way from South Florida, the pioneering forefather of a new genre called “Funk Trap”, Antonio Ramsey, makes his debut in Black Sheep Magazine.

Would you please introduce yourself to the readership of Black Sheep?

My name is Antonio Ramsey and I'm a South Florida-bred entertainer currently living bi-coastal between Atlanta and Los Angeles. I actually started my entertainment career background dancing for artists like Missy Elliott, Trina, etc, but I wanted to step out from behind and get a taste of the main stage. Once I got a taste though I was hooked, and knew singing was all I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

You are considered a pioneer of 'Trap Funk' (Funk Trap.) Would you care to explain further of the genre?

Funk Trap is a unique sound that fuses my love for soul music from the likes of James Brown to Al Green with my South Florida upbringing. When I put the two together it brought something raw, new and full of emotion. Funk Trap is also a type of attitude for me. When I think Funk Trap I just think of living your life to the fullest and not letting anyone dictate your happiness.

To date your songs have been accompanied with what would be considered 'raunchy' promo videos. Was this a conscious decision to stand out?

There's always the debate whether an artist does something to "stand out" or not. When it comes to me as an artist I am always going to be me! I mean had I been a sixteen or seventeen year old, then no, I probably wouldn't have those types of images. But I'm a grown man doing grown man things, so why not put it into a song. Lol

Your current platter "All Night Long" is starting to build attention. It has a sound that the UK urban clubs tend to embrace. Would you love to as an artist go global?

I think it's every artist's dream to be able to crossover into the global market. I would love to be able to travel to different countries like the U.K, with that being one of my top places to go. I love the energy that everyone overseas shows. I've even been practicing my accent today ! Lol

If an ever an opportunity to take part in a possible career boosting reality TV show - would you consider accepting it?

I would love to venture off into the television side of the entertainment business. Now as far as reality shows, that's a tricky question because I'm not sure if I want everyone all in my business. Lol. But depending on what type of reality show it would be, I would definitely be open to it.

As a recording artist, who did you consider your musical influences?

Well, I grew up listening to old-school singers like Al Green, Rick James and James Brown, which is who changed everything about music for me. James Brown made me start FEELING music. But I also grew up when 90s music was at its prime and looked up to artists like Jodeci, H-Town & Bobby Brown! Man, the 1990s was an amazing era!

Which other fellow ‘independent’ artists would hold your interest enough for you to collaborate with if the opportunity occurred?

I would love to work with Rumour Castro. You wouldn't expect him to sound the way he does! I can tell he has a lot of soul to his voice, and I think we could make some amazing music together.

What else can we expect from you?

You can expect a lot this year for Antonio Ramsey. Finishing up my debut EP. I have some dope tours in the works, with stops in L.A, Atlanta and New York. I'm just really excited about expanding Funk Trap and letting the masses get a taste of it all!

Anything that you'd care to add before this interview concludes?

I first and foremost want say thank you for this opportunity and to every independent artist out there trying to live your dream, enjoy the process and trust God's timing. It will happen!
