Electric Erotic

By Josh Joel | 26 August 2017

Minneapolis native Josh Joel for Black Sheep, proudly presents modern pop-dance artist Aaron Paul, born and raised in London, England. At 45 years young, he is already on his sophomore album titled “Electric Erotic”. His journey from group stardom to a successful solo career wasn’t as simple as he believed it to be, especially after leaving the English boy band Worlds Apart.

HOW DOES HIS STORY START?

I was raised in a multicultural home and influenced by various music and arts. I also studied ballet and went to a performing arts school in my hometown. But then that something changed my life forever., “Once I saw Michael Jackson’s THRILLER video .. that was it... I said .. I'm gonna SING! Michael Jackson was a beast! Not only from his incredible great talent. But the way he mastered his art of celebrity. He made himself larger than life...Through his looks and performances! And that to me is what made him untouchable and someone to aspire to too.

AND NOT JUST FROM THE GLOVED ONE TOO!

There are others out there too.. PRINCE, MADONNA, WHITNEY HOUSTON, BOWIE, TINA TURNER, LUTHER VANDROSS and also the late GEORGE MICHAEL. All were genius in their own right. Each of them lived in their truth and out out material that is unmatched today. There work will all stand the test of time! And if I could only get a once of what they all did. I would be a happy man! I can die and be good!”

WHAT NEXT FOR AARON?

When asked about his major influences growing up in the U.K. and then some others. Aaron also mentioned his other upcoming project that would be pleasantly surprising for his fans.
“I think my house was the worlds compete song book..lol. My parents played all genres and we loved them all! Plus I come from a family of many recording artists esp in the reggae world! Which I just adore! and my next project I'm gonna surprise you all. I'm doing a throwback 80s project with some of the great 80s dance hits on it. This time and there songs are the fabric of my life. And the music from this era resonates in my soul. I'm having song real fun right now recording these songs and are sounding amazing. And I think many will be surprised! Just when I thought I could rest a little now that ELECTRIC EROTIC is released lol .. I'm back working on the next project “. *laughs*

AND HOW IT ALL BEGAN?

Before I began my career as a member of a successful boyband called Worlds Apart, I  concentrated on songwriting and performing all over the U.K.  After I turned 18 years-old after meeting Simon Conwell, future “American Idol”’judge, “He put me as the lead singer for his boyband called WORLDS APART. It was how AMERICAN IDOL / POP IDOL idea was founded on. He auditioned about 10,000 boys for the project. And I was selected to front the group with my voice.”

Aaron helped these fellows achieve success throughout the U.K. and Europe between 1993 and 1994 with five chart records including two top 20 hits in the U.K. with their biggest hit which got all the way to #15, “Could It Be (I’m Falling In Love)” (Detroit Spinners cover). All five of their chart records were from the eponymous album “Together”. However, fronting this highly successful act was only short-lived in fact he left shortly after. Moving from group to solo isn’t as simple as it seems, in fact he learned the hard way.

“After years of chart success throughout Europe and several member changes.. I decided to quit the group and move to America so start my own solo career. I thought I would go on to have the glorious career off the back of WORLDS APART and boy was I wrong! I basically had to start all over again. And now 20 years later .. I'm breaking some ground while being true to myself and hard work!
This business is not easy. People don't realize the amount of sacrifice it's really takes to be in this business. And I ain’t mad at anyone who is successful because I know what they have been through to get there and stay there!”

BACK TO THE PRESENT?

For Aaron in the 2010s, he realized that there are second chances and did not take it lightly at all. He currently makes his home in New York City and decided to record again but only on his terms.

“I'm so grateful to have been given a second chance to make some noise with my music. Most only get 1 shot! THATS IT! But now I'm have a platform and audience that is growing daily and the amount of love I get from all walks of life regarding my music.. is overwhelming! And that is what fuels me! That's what makes it all worth it! Nothing more is better.. when someone tells you that your work has touched them in someway. I'm telling you.. it's better than sex! Lol”   I making the music I've always wanted to make. And I'm also operating in this business...by changing the rule book a bit! Don't get me wrong.. I've got my HATERS too.

"But they don't have to listen or watch me. I'm just doing what I have to do and do it the best way I can!”, Aaron said with ample passion. Naturally, his debut solo album “Raw” would drop and one epic single from that set would perform considerably well on the radio and dance hit lists. I asked him how excited he was on just getting his foot in the door and about his first unapologetic single called “I Don’t Care”. Aaron said with a boat load of excitement, “OMG it was too exciting! I would roll out of bed and just go downstairs into the studio at my own leisure. My studio is in my mother’s basement!

"And I would just spend all day just writing and recording by myself. And when my mother would come home from work.. I would play her what I did.. and her face was like WOW.. You did that in my basement. Lol. I remember the 3rd song into the album... I didn't even write lyrics. Usually I would have the lyrics all set out and record! 95% of this album was of the cuff. I would just play the track and what ever came to mind or how the music made me feel I would just sing and write.. right there on the spot! And build the song that way. I was like a kid in a candy store sometimes.. so excited by the arrangements I had made or the lyrics I put down. Of little sparkles as I call them would be just fed to me .. from out of nowhere! Seriously.. this whole process was the 1st for me. And so organic.

"The RAW project was exciting too.. cause finally I was making my own full solo album for the 1st time. It would be the 1st time that my past audience would be listening to me and hear what I have to say! And I purposely broke the rule book with that album! I said I'm gonna make the kind of album I want too. I ain’t gonna conform to what is expected of me .. because of the colour of my skin or my preferred sexual orientation. I'm gonna do what ever I want and those who don't like it.. oh well! Lol. I DON'T CARE! My 1st Number 1 song came of the RAW Album. And it's with that attitude I went in with is what made that sing a huge club hit and touch so many. The best thing I could have ever have done for my revived career was write that song!”

THE FANBASE, THE TRANSITIONAL PERIOD, TECHNICALITY AND THEN SOME?

The responses from his fans were not chart busting but the outpours of cries and gratitude were enormous just as well. I also asked him if would consider re-introducing and re-releasing the single in the future.
“Daily I get messages from people who thank me for writing such a positive lyric with such strength and conviction. It speaks to many..and I am forever honoured to have been fed those lyrics to give hope, and comfort to thousands of people! I've had witness grown adults cry in front of me onstage singing that song! And it's always without a doubt an audience favourite! Yes.. the good thing is I own the song  and I can always do what ever with it! And as my platform get a little bit bigger I can re/introduce that song again.. MOS DEF!”.

Before Aaron transitioned into an epic pop-dance soulful star, he wasn’t as open during is tenure in the group World’s Apart with very good reason.

“They are spending millions on the marketing towards young screaming girls (he laughs) And also being from a part Jamaican background..”. To sum it up, it just wasn’t the right time for him to be open about his sexuality. “But in all honestly at that age I didn't even know who I was. You kinda live in denial or it's just a phase etc. but with life experiences and growth, maturity.. I've learned to love, embrace and accept who I am inside and out. And at this age... I DON'T CARE! You know I was just so buried in doing what I luv to do at that time it was easy just to hide all that in the music. But those who are close to me know the truth. And they love me regardless! Cause at the end of day .. I'm Aaron at the end of all .. and that love me regardless! I'm am blessed.”

“The one thing that is very surprising to me is the straight guys crowd .. that have really taken to me & my show, I see this veil that gets lifted as soon as I start performing .. at 1st I don't think they know what to expect .. but by the 2nd song into the set they are on their feet with the ladies & the gays ... lol .. very interesting!”

Just last year he released his sophomore album “Electric Erotic”, Aaron plans to get his message and music out there…universally! However, there are a few challenges, here’s how he tells it.

“Believe it or not.. I always think mainstream! My albums have something for everyone.. and I try not to leave anyone out! The only issue is mainstream radio is a bitch to get played on. It's a whole other barrier to breakthrough and being a indie artist makes it a lot harder. If you listen to a lot of current radio.. they play the same 5 songs all day. Gone are the days when a DJ would break a record or introduce a new artist. Now it's all programmed. I've even met big radio hosts/ Djs and said they love my work and is worthy of being played on their radio shows. But their hands are tied because of the politics. It's sucks! But it the times music is now in!” Yes..for me it's only natural to write songs! That's the easy part for me ...lol. And yes I really love the whole process of creating a song! And DEF I will be writing songs for other artists! I have a lot of them now approaching me for their projects which is a true blessing. It's now founding the time to fit it all in”.

Aaron also added an important ingredient that is missing in today’s terrestrial radio market. “It's a sad fact now with the digital age we now live in. Programs are doing a lot and taken the personality out of music. Just be grateful that we can remember a time.. when music was RAW and the truth. Lol” When it comes to recording, Aaron is the boss when it comes to getting that finished product polished and ready. “it's a sad fact now with the digital age we now live in.

"Programs are doing a lot and taken the personality out of music. Just be grateful that we can remember a time.. when music was RAW and the truth. Lol I work with many producers / remixers and they look at me like I'm CRAZY that I still want to record my own background vocals lol .. they say can get the computer program to do that .. why would you want to spend time layering vocal tracks.. my response is "HELL NO" that's not the way I do my records" lol I all for the latest trends, sounds and effects. But I will always will record RAW vocals They hate me lol cause when I deliver vocal tracks.. there are a ton of them .. they gotta work with! Lol It's just my style and teachings”.

Typically, a recording of anywhere between half a year to a couple of years to complete. Between his two sets of musical masterpieces it this soulful pop-dance artist spent quality time building and making a name for himself. “ELECTRIC EROTIC .. was done in a total of I say 10 months from start to finish. But that because I also kept writing songs to all the tracks that kept coming in.. lol. That album has 18 songs in total and I think maybe 2 or 3 songs didn’t make the final cut! I said why not... this maybe my last album so make it with a BANG! Lol

"The RAW album took a little longer. And that's because I had other producers at the helm of it. With the new album I was in FULL total control of the recording process! In fact it's the 1st time EVER I've recorded my own vocals by myself! And believe me that's the BEST feeling for me about this album! Is that I don't need anyone to make a Aaron Paul album! Lol. The whole experience and process was a completed learning curve for me. It made me grow up and forced me to be really getting know how I want to sound and execute it! I should have done it this way before a long time ago. But NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT I say. And going forward I will always work this way! The goal was to def get the album out by the end of 2016. We kept missing deadlines.. originally was due out last summer. But everything happens when it's supposed to.. I believe.”

A BORN AGAIN STAR?

When setting up promos and getting his music out there to his fans, I asked him who was responsible for all of this.

“I am responsible for everything! Everything you see me put out.. is my brain child. Executed from the talents of others with me. I come up with all the concepts and we just find a way to make it work visually. And it goes out through my publicist to various media platforms and my social media etc. and the end of the day it's my name attached to the project so I have to 100% control. In this biz.. you HOT & then your NOT! So I have make sure I believe and am proud of a project 1st. Cause once it's out there.. that's it.. it's out there for ever. Especially with social media running things now”. From there, I offered my congrats to Aaron on his featured content, the song “Devil Can’t Stop Me” on the indie movie “Just Run”.

He also spoke a little more in detail the influence on social and his latest project on that movie.

“Yes.. social media is running things 100%. Even down to how we pick & choose our political candidates. Everything now is a popularity contest.. the more LIKES or FOLLOWERS you have you will be NUMBER ONE! It's not about the substance or creative ability or how much knowledge you have or if your qualified anymore. It's all about how popular you are! There are pros & cons to both sides. The good thing through social media you can have a direct link to your audience and control what is being fed out there! I've gained a lot of my audience through social media otherwise no one would have heard from me or know what I'm up too. But I still want to maintain a essence of substance and sound quality that is a reflection of my past but still remain relevant to today's market.

"My song DEVIL will be a part of a movie now forever ..YAY! It's flattering to have your work chosen and use for someone else's creative vision. I am very blessed with all that have come my way. And I realize that nothing lasts forever. If u had told me 5 years ago.. people would be wanting to interview me or are excited my music.. I would never have believed you. But through belief, dedication and hard work and the power from above.. I can be all that I can be and set out to do.”

AND FINALLY!........

On the final leg of this candid and pleasurable interview with Aaron Paul, I thanked him for his time and he also a mutual friend, Felix Mensah who is also a contributing writer for Black Sheep that made many things possible for his career “from his impeccable worldwide artist/music knowledge, thank you so much, again”.

So, "Every Life Matters" is the current single.  Yes.. “Every Life Matters” is the current single from the album “Electric Erotic” and much more to come as social media is running things 100%. But I still want to maintain an essence of substance and sound quality that is a reflection of my past but still remain relevant to today's market. Spring of next year .. for a complete new album”
