Alex Harris: Mancunian USA

By Felix Mensah | 21 September 2017

His name is Alex and he's from Manchester…..no, not that one, but the one located in Atlanta, Georgia. America’s latest soul music hopeful Alex Harris donates a spare moment or so to Black Sheep in an exclusive interview.

Would you please like to introduce yourself to the readership?

My name is Alex Harris. I was born and raised in Manchester, a rural town of Georgia, located southeast of Atlanta.

Tell us about your background?

For as far as I can remember, I have always heard music, melodies and rhythms. My first drum set was the buckets from our neighbour’s backyard and drumsticks were the pine tree branches and my cymbals were the tin piecrust pans from my mom’s kitchen.

My introduction and inspiration comes from my upbringing in the church. My parents, Pastor James and Carolyn Harris, always had us in the church 4 days a week.

About your song “Wordless"; did you write the song? What was your inspiration for it?

Wordless, is personal.  I wrote and produced the song because of my experience of becoming culturally victim of constant isolation through our digitally distracted culture. More often than not, I struggle with being distracted from the present moment by my iPhone.

In reflection of my behaviour, I thought of how often I become so consumed with being ‘connected’ that I am  constantly becoming ‘disconnected.’ I often question my behavior - - What's happening to the present moment? What's happening to now, especially with those whom are physically present and I care most about?

As I engaged the writing process of the song, Wordless, I thought of how I can share my reflective moments of adjusting my behavior to encourage others to become more aware of how easily we can become victims of devaluing the humanness of humanity, specifically in the present moment, if we are not careful.

When I became more aware, it became apparent to me how often I would go throughout each day not taking full advantage of the physical presence of those who are important to me. We are human, we are not machines or devices, and we need each other to write each other’s song. No one is an island, we cannot stand-alone –- We are Wordless without each other, especially those we love.

Who and what are your influences?

My artistic influences are Sam Cooke, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Otis Redding, James Brown, just to name a few.

Are there any ambitions to take your music outside the US?

I practice seizing opportunity; therefore, my ambition is to follow the music wherever it takes me. I love enjoy travelling and meeting people.

If you were stuck on an isolated island and given the choice of an album to put on your ipod which album would it be and why?

I would choose Sam Cooke’s Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964. I would choose that album because it has 30 of Sam Cooke’s greatest hits that have a great expression of love, passion, spirituality and hope for the human experience.

Who are your favourite artists?

I am not certain I can answer the question  - “Who are my favorite artists?” To answer such great question, I would need more than a little space or time to say. However, I will say that I highly favor artists because of my high appreciation for artistry and passion of the artist, of various genres and mediums, including both performing and fine arts.

If there was any given opportunity to collaborate in any shape or form any of any of the following artists/links you have carefully viewed, (Alex was given a series of music links to listen to) - which of the following, (name as many as you like,) from the submitted links would hold enough personal interest alone to warrant a collaboration request?

I would love the opportunity to collaborate with each one of the submitted artists; however, if I were absolutely made to choose 2 or 3,  I would choose the following artists because I feel there may be some instant synergy that compliments each other the stylistically:

The Drizabone Soul Family
Hannah White
Doggett Brothers
