Job Title: A&R Manager

Company: Chrysalis Music

By Richard Bamford | 25 June 2009

First job within the music industry - and how you got it?
I worked for The Echo Label doing work experience.

How did you work your way up to where you are?
Lots of hard work; doing everything that was asked of me and then some.

What has been the highest point of your career?
The UK number one album, To Lose My Life…,with White lies.

Artists you have the fondest memories working with?
All of them really: Feeder, Moloko, Howard Payne, Ray Lamonatge, Engineers, Bat for Lashes, The Cribs, White Lies, Pete Lawrie, Mostar diving club.

Most stressful part of your job?
Getting on the radio. Also, the deadlines and the closing of deals.

Best part of your job?
Listening to music all day and working with creative people making music.

What would your advice be to people wanting to work within a record company?
Be prepared for long hours and working your way up.

How has the digital revolution changed your role?
In a way yes; access to music is much faster. You can send music all round the world in a second and a buzz can start in hours rather than weeks.

Is there anything about the work you’d like to change – and why?
No, not really.

What is your least fondest memory (albeit getting naked at a Christmas party [sic] etc…) throughout your career?
Jon Lee from Feeder dying just as they were broke.

If you weren’t working in A&R for Chrysalis, what do you think you’d be doing?
I’d be a Pig farmer.

Have you ever dabbled in anything musically other than your job?
No. It was very clear early on which side I would be on.
