Crown Heights Affair to unleash new recordings

By Duncan Payne | 04 July 2017
Leading seventies East Coast Funk act Crown Heights Affair, who scored with a succession of Disco floorfillers and top 30 chart hits such as ‘Dreaming A Dream’, ‘Every Beat Of My Heart’, ‘Foxy Lady’, ‘Dancin’, ‘Galaxy Of Love’, ‘Dance Lady Dance’ and ‘You Gave Me Love’, have just been putting the final touches to some brand new recordings.

The group disbanded in 1983 after seven highly-acclaimed albums, but reformed four years ago and are ready to set dancefloors alight once more. Featuring original members guitarist/ vocalist William Anderson and Darryl Gibbs (sax), the first single ‘Mary Mary’ is due out soon on Trezure Roxx Records. ‘Mary Mary’ also features legendary funk bassist Sandy Anderson who played on sessions by Unlimited Touch (‘Searching To Find The One’ and ‘I Hear Music In The Streets’), Odyssey (‘Inside Out’), France Joli (‘Gonna Get Over You’) and countless other New York club classics.

The label has been at the forefront of a resurgence of interest in seventies and eighties funk sounds put in a contemporary setting, which Trezure Roxx embrace as ‘The Funkwave Movement’. It tasted success with the Fresh Band featuring Tony Mack ‘Trezure The Love’ EP released several months ago and the recent Crown Heights Affair sessions coincides with an exciting distribution deal with giants Sony Music. Mack contributed vocal support on the recordings with the final mixes laid down at Lil’ Drummaboy Recordings studio in Philadelphia complete with Crown Heights Affair’s signature horns.

Darryl Gibbs, VP of Trezure Roxx who was also heavily involved with the comeback ‘Reloaded’ EP by The Strikers earlier this year said: “We tried not too far to stray from Crown Heights Affair’s original sound.” Future releases on Trezure Roxx will include a new single by hot new talent Shannel ‘B’, the daughter of the late James ‘Ajax’ Baynard who played trumpet with Crown Heights Affair. Tony Mack added, “There will also be a host of amazing Funk and Jazzance artists added to the label roster.”
