Montezuma's Revenge

Artist: Souls Of Mischief

Label: Clear Label Records

By Christopher Mitchell | 21 February 2010
Souls Of Mischief deserve a lot more props than they usually get.  Yes, they are revered in underground circles but along with The Pharcyde, they were one of the first and few West Coast based acts that showed a different side to the gangsta rap content that seemed to dominate the charts and airwaves in the early nineties.  Nearly sixteen years after dropping their classic debut album, A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai, along with special guest producer Prince Paul, are back for revenge on their fourth L.P.

A loving and honest relationship can be great, but Souls also show us how a bad relationship can literally make you Postal.  Over moody violins and piercing drums, the Oakland boys open up about the difficulties of making romantic unions work and the sheer stress it can bring.  Their lamentations are so vivid and insightful that they will make single people breathe a sigh of relief.

In the spirit of lyrical exercise, Souls bring out the verbal knives on Proper Aim.  They aim for heads, necks chests and all other vulnerable areas with a lethal barrage of barbed bars.  They really do carve this beat up completely.  The crew introduce some Asian flavour on the closer La-La-La.  The tone of track is of one of affirmation and celebration as they proudly proclaim that they will “reign now and forever”.

Overall, the chemistry that they are so often noted for remains intact and produces great results as there are no weak songs anywhere in this entire audio adventure.  They included a key ingredient in the production of Prince Paul and this only adds more layers to their already colourful creativeness; ultimately making Montezuma's Revenge the strongest effort they have released in their post millennium output.

They say revenge is a dish best served cold, but this dish needed to be piping hot and it most definitely is.
