“ZZZZ” is his latest introduction release. It is an accomplishment on many levels: from the self-produced instrumentals to the vocal arrangements, plus the hefty compilation of Global MCs, singers and musicians.
The LP encompasses topics of social change, love and personal progression, all set during the syndrome of sleep and dreaming, hence the opening track liner “fall asleep, to the rhythm of your breathing…” and exiting the track list with an alarm clock ringing.
It commences with a positive laid-back and contemplatory mood. As “New World” addresses the theme of universal change, Ken Ross merges two continents to support the cause in the form of guest artists Magestik Legend from Detroit, and London,'s Jo´Leon Davenue.
“Prayer” really sets Ken Ross as the not forced vocalist, as he solo’s this one with electrifying backing strings that recreate a live George Benson jam. Tracks that follow his soloist sets are “The Waiting Line” and “Cold Sweat,” both pieces true to jazz-funk. I believe song “ZZZZ 2.0” contains for the main part extracts from a Seu Jorge sample off the song "Tive Razão" … a chopped and screwed version of it which sounds like the official psychedelic remix.
A stand-out track would be the Radiohead cover on “All I Need”, with Annie Rago, a jazzy alternative female vocalist co-hosting the song. Rappers Jordan Looney and Soupa rhyme their way across a galactic, percussive explorer titled “Stop!” with styles reminding me of one “the cool” Lupe Fiasco and the other mildly of Common.
As the ZZZZ story unfolds to the end, you will cruise your way to hear hip slow jam duet “I’m Still” featuring Alexia Blakley and the outspoken hook “True To You” play conversation with the keys of Malcolm Campbell. Other artists featured are A-Live and Oddisee.
Ken Ross proves himself musically, not as a work in progress, but born in synch with perfection. Green Street is the indie label and ZZZZ EP is available FREE to download: www.kenrossmusic.net
