Voyage To India

Artist: India Arie

Label: Universal

By Charles Waring | 06 August 2010

It's hard to believe that it's almost a decade since this honey-voiced singer/songwriter from Denver, Colorado, released her debut album, 'Acoustic Soul.' A gorgeous collection of mellow-vibed neo-soul, it went on to sell three million copies, earned seven Grammy nominations and transformed India Arie Simpson into a bona fide R&B star.

It's follow up was 2002's 'Voyage To India,' which is now reissued as an expanded 2-CD set. Though sales-wise it didn't quite match 'Acoustic Soul,' nevertheless 'Voyage To India' was a strong sophomore outing featuring 15 well-crafted songs. It also managed to grab a couple of Grammies along the way, further cementing Arie's reputation as a songwriter with something different to say from the R&B norm.

Eight years on, 'Voyage To India' has lots none of its allure, with 'Get It Together' – a meditative ballad – and the infectious single, 'Little Things,' standing out from the pack. That song also turns up in remixed form on a limited edition 7-track bonus CD, along with tunes that weren't included on the album, like 'Butterfly' and 'Interested.' There's also an ear-catching duet with Stevie Wonder in the shape of the yuletide standard, 'Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire).' An album well worth revisiting.
