Madlib & Guilty Simpson

Artist: OJ Simpson

Label: Stones Throw

By Matthew Rodriguez | 25 August 2010

A collaboration between Otis 'Madlib' Jackson and Guilty Simpson, the OJ Simpson project has been building for a little while now. Madlib's prodigious work rate, myriad side projects and a career stretching back over 15 years mark him out as one of hip hop's most creative forces. Coupled with Guilty Simpson, whose deep, alliterative flow, wicked sense of humor and stories of ghetto life have been pricking ears since 2003's Jaylib LP, you'd be thinking you'd have classic on hand.

This LP doesn't try to be something its not and is all the better for it. Madlib's style of short, scratchy instrumentals, off kilter beats and Pryor-esque humor provides the ideal foil for Simpson's flow and oh does he kill it. Part of Guilty's popularity has always been the combination of smart word play back up with heavy attitude and its here in buckets. The obligatory Dilla tribute, J-Rocc on cuts and a few low profile guest spots and you're done. Instrumentals weave in and out of sampled dialogue, comedy skits and Guilty's bars to bring one of this year's standout albums. Go cop.
