Support act U.G.O Crew gave an energetic performance and several insightful soundbites, yet there wasn't quite the musical talent or depth to back it up. Digable Planets, on the other hand, had it all. As soon as they walked on stage, their ultra cool and positive vibe created much excitement. The energy they exuded was electric, with each member adding a different dimension to the proceedings and the visual aspect was one of glorious Technicolor and variety. From the classic hip-hop cool of 'Doodlebug' to Butterfly's laid-back yet razor-sharp look, and the hint of flesh provided by Nigerian rapper Madarocka (replacing original band mate Ladybug Mecca.
In the true ethos of Digable Planets this was definitely a display of 'distinctive minds working in harmony', showcasing the talent of each musician. Butterfly on the drum machine looked like a kid with his favourite toy, bringing a New York street feel to the compositions. Doodlebug is the essence of smooth, perfectly complimenting Butterfly's cheeky style, whilst Madarocka added a feminine attitude, with the band wrapping it up in a funky, multi textured package.
Among the highlights was the crowd interaction. The intimacy of the venue made it seem like a house party, and despite being hip-hop royalty and having redefined the game, it felt like the group was partying with us. Digable Planets truly looked as though this was one of the best gigs they had played in their lives. Even the sometimes corny call-and-response was so natural and fun.
The night wouldn't have been complete without tributes to Guru. For DP, and particularly Doodlebug, this wasn't simply the loss of a hip-hop great, but a collaborative brother, as Guru featured on the classic DP joint 'Borough Check (Blowout Comb).'
Digable Planets include a Grammy among their accolades, and both the original members are in full swing with other projects. Doodlebug, ever the astute entrepreneur, didn't miss an opportunity to promote the Root 70 Lounge label with the logo emblazoned on his T-shirt. But as we approached the early hours and the venue cleared, the band packed up their own stuff and chatted with punters, making it clear just how down-to-earth they are. If there was any question of whether true hip-hop is dead, they absolutely refuted that claim and proved it is very much alive and kicking. They are not only the real deal but are simply Cool Like Dat. It was well worth the wait in every respect.
