"The greatest rapper of all time died on March 9th" - Canibus on "2nd
Round Knockout. There's not much that can be said that hasn't already been said. We all probably remember where we were and what were doing on March 13th 1997 when we heard the news that Christopher Wallace also known as The Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down. In fact, I'm still hurt about it. Real talk.
In the years that have passed, Biggie's words have been analysed,
interpreted, reworked but most importantly enjoyed. He might have been
"black and ugly as ever" but the man had a God given gift with the rhymes.
This Back In The Day is the video for Warning, taken from my favourite Hip
Hop album of all time, Ready To Die, which was the first Biggie song I ever
heard. I still remember seeing this video for the first time thinking
"rappers actually eat cereal?". A trivial thought in retrospect, but that
was Biggie... larger than life but down to earth like the pavement. Even
in 2010, this joint still knocks and is a testament to Biggie's lyrical
ability, storytelling and wit – the man could literally rap a movie.
In closing, his iconic status among musical legends is irrefutable and he
is definitely the greatest emcee of all time. Like he said back in 1994...
"Biggie Smalls is the illest".
